(Image credit: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images) It's the little things This choice of closer is particularly eerie in the wake of Layne Staley's death. Alice in Chains play some of their greatest hits (including Rooster and Would?) and even throw in a brand new, never released song – the finale, Killer Is Me. The set was compiled like an album, which is likely why the record itself, when it was released on CD format, became such a big hit with audiences.įollowing Nutshell, the band move into Brother and then No Excuses – a song that just lends itself to the acoustic format. The lyrics "We face the path of time/And yet I fight/And yet I fight/This battle all alone/No one to cry to/No place to call home" are so much more soul-stirring when placed up against the tranquility of the intimate setting and calmer-paced melody, and opening with this hopelessness and despair is all the more heartbreaking.Īlice In Chains prepared the entire show ahead of time, with the specifications of MTV Unplugged in mind, creating a set list that balances more energetic tracks with solemn, tenser songs. Every word resonates and Staley and Cantrell's raw, signature harmonies with no accompaniment will chill you to the core. ![]() While we were all aware of Staley's battle against addiction (there were many rumours circulating about his decline in health, which only became worse after the band's hiatus) and while AIC's lyrics had never shied way from the bleak reality of his relationship with drugs they become all the more stark and impactful when crooned alongside the strums of an acoustic guitar. Staley immediately starts singing it as he takes a seat, without any perceived warning but somehow seamlessly matching with guitarist Jerry Cantrell's strumming. If a band can start a show, an MTV live show aired on international television, with an album track you know they're something special. Opening with Nutshell – taken from Alice In Chains' third studio EP Jar Of Flies – the track has become a staple of 90s grunge, despite never being released as a single. Every song transforms from a powerful, angry and forceful catharsis to a frustrated and haunting lament. If you were to know nothing about the band prior to listening, odds are you'd still come away moved.ĪIC's down-tuned sludgy heavy metal somehow lends itself to the acoustic format. It's not just the tragic backstory that makes Alice In Chains Unplugged a poignant piece of work, the tracks themselves are what make it a truly formidable live record. (Image credit: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images) Acoustic Alice in Chains is nothing short of haunting "I wish I could just hug you all, but I'm not gonna," Staley proclaims at the end of the record – and we wish we could hug you right back, Layne. The album understandably garnered a resurgence of recognition after the death of Staley, with many media outlets – even those who had given the album initially scathing reviews – praising the power of performance despite his condition at the time. His once glowing, cheeky grin is replaced by a morose, pained half-smile, but nevertheless, his sense of humour is still prevalent and he immediately belts out Nutshell and continues to give a strong vocal performance throughout – a testament to his sheer natural talent. Sunglasses disguise his blackened eyes, long sleeves cover scars left behind from shooting up and he awkwardly clutches his hands together as if afraid to emerge from the shadows and take centre stage – quite different from the powerful vocalist we'd come to know and love. ![]() ![]() ![]() The original performance is therefore a chilling look at the tragic downfall of one of rock's most charismatic and enigmatic frontmen from glam rock loving metal star to the epitome of grunge – in the most negative sense of the word: a bedraggled junkie with scruffy pink hair awkwardly shuffles from the back of the stage and takes his seat. Staley overdosed following their concert in Kansas City on July 3 and despite the frontman recovering from the incident AIC were put on hiatus, and other than one brief recording two years later, where the band briefly reunited to record the songs Get Born Again and Died for Music Bank, Alice in Chains never played with Staley again. His final ever performance was in the same year, when Alice in Chains replaced Stone Temple Pilots in an opening slot for the newly reunited Kiss. Alice in Chains Unplugged marked the second to last performance from Staley, who was battling a crippling addiction to heroin that was poignantly chronicled through the band's dark and agonising lyrics.

Here is both Warlord’s best and potentially worst shake up to the standard RTS gameplay that many might be familiar with from other titles. If the defender manages to hold back the tide, they’re usually better able to launch an attack of their own, though clearing the enemy controlled warlords along the way needs to be considered as well. Siege engines, ladders and infantry clash against towers walls, booby traps, and stalwart defenders as one side seeks to take the walls and undo the opposition’s economy, eventually storming the keep and killing the player’s leader. The grand finale of a good game of Stronghold is a full-blown assault. There is always a weak point that you should be probing for, so the constant arms race of building up a fortress can’t be the only thing on your mind. Since both players are warring over control of these warlords, Stronghold: Warlords manages to avoid any mid game slump. With a dedicated attack or diplomatic actions, players can capture a warlord and bring them over to their side where they can be mercilessly pressed for resources and bonuses. Warlords dot the map at regular intervals, breaking up ownership of the whole between their own holdings and both players. “Those familiar with and looking for the same gameplay from earlier Stronghold titles may be put off by this emphasis on offense, but there is enough of the classic gameplay here, and new players more used to the likes of Starcraft might not be ready for the slow start.” Both sides need to build up a stable enough economy to afford small scale raids and enough military power to capture the new addition to the Stronghold formula: Warlords. There is a familiar rush to get early industry going and the proper build queues in place followed by feverishly panning the map to see where resources, the neutral warlords, and any natural choke points may be hiding. There is still a war to be won after all. That isn’t to say that there is no traditional RTS gameplay to be had. It takes some getting used to but is plenty fun. Building up is therefore a balancing act between ensuring steady growth for coin and resource harvesting and military expenditure. Therefore, the kind of housing, materials, food rations, and the like that you offer will drive up population growth, while high taxes, poor housing, and poor food will lower it. Unlike Starcraft and Age of Empires, Stronghold employs a morale system to allocate population, rather than relying on building individual workers. Giant walls, tightly packed economic buildings, villagers complaining about life. The campaigns and multiplayer are the meat of the game, the first preparing you to tackle the true dangers of the second, but there is definitely enough content here to keep you interested if the core gameplay mechanics are to your liking. There are five major campaigns, one of which focuses on economic development over combat, skirmish modes, multiplayer, and a free building mode. Stronghold: Warlords is a real time strategy game that focuses on developing a castle and adjoining town to build up enough of an army to successfully lay siege to your enemy while defending yourself from the same. Can Stronghold Warlords hold out? The bugler races to the top of the tallest tower to blast out a triumphant “Sort of!” Finally, from all around new faces emerge, charging into the prepared defenses of a very different kind of strategy game. Even the most prosaic items were fair game for financing. Conversely, when given the option between BNPL and debit, shoppers made no moral distinction. “Credit cards are always the worst,” she said. Ghosh’s research involves polling consumers about which method of spending makes them feel the most guilty. “We have sort of indoctrinated younger borrowers in the idea that having credit-card debt is bad,” Anastasiya Ghosh, a University of Arizona marketing professor, told me. Government agencies such as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau also strongly discouraged overextension. The elimination of housing wealth for millions of Americans fueled a credit crunch, in which banks tightened credit standards and sharply curtailed their lending. Following the ’08 financial crisis, personal debt became a public bogeyman. He said that Gen Z was skeptical of credit cards, possibly because many of them had seen their parents sink into debt. “We found that most of the people that use buy now, pay later either don’t have or don’t use a credit card,” Marco Di Maggio, an economist at Harvard, told me. The widespread embrace of this kind of lending system says a lot about Americans’ relationship to debt-particularly among the younger borrowers who made BNPL popular (about half of BNPL users are 33 or under). That’s still a small fraction of the amount charged to credit cards, but the fast adoption of BNPL points to its mainstream appeal. And though Americans have used layaway programs since the Great Depression, today’s pay-later plans flip the order of operations: Rather than claiming an item and taking it home only after you’ve paid in full, consumers using these modern payment plans can acquire an item for just a small deposit and a cursory credit check. While the idea of eidetic, photographic, or both types of memory have been depicted in plenty of television series and movies for decades (Rain Man immediately comes to mind), each has taken its own unique twist on the concept. An eidetic memory refers to someone who can see an object for a short period after it is no longer present while true photographic memory is when someone can remember full pages of text or numbers in great detail. There are slight differences between the two terms, which are often used interchangeably.
